THE DAY CARE CENTER IN RATMALANA

This center is mostly maintained for the mentally retarded and physically disabled children presently described as differently abled, irrespective of class, creed, race or religion These children with special needs have to be provided with facilities to enhance their educational, aesthetic and recreational skills. Through these activities our hope is to change the attitude of society, towards these children. Our main objective is to value them as equal and useful citizens.

Routine activities like training in hand work and playing with sand, clay, paper exercises to maintain their health and hygiene are conducted. They are taken to parks to play about and also engage in activities participating in exhibitions, fancy dress parades, open-air camps and religious festivals.

They are also invited to join in the World Down’s Syndrome Day and The World Children’s Day celebrations where walks, variety shows, medical clinics are organized by the Lions’ Club, Rotary Club and Ceylon Association for mentally retarded. They have performed many dancing items at many events organized by Sarvoday Suwasetha and others.

SWIMMING PROGRAMME

This is an activity that the children have a great liking. Hydro therapy provides them with exercise to all parts of the body and help them to socialize, the use of the swimming pool for the children is provided free of charge, transport to and from the pool is provided by the parents. As the costs incurred in this activity has been escalating it was only possible to engage in swimming on a rather irregular basis, Ms. Lousi Corstan who was a volunteer at this home helped to get this activity to be conducted on a regular basis.

Ms. Jenna Garrow of the USA who was a volunteer working at this center for a few moths had this to say. “Consistent routine has been established and the children know what to expect “ she goes on to say “different age range and activity level of each child needs more facilities, to effectively develop them” Thus more funds are required to effectively provide better standards.

Consequent to a project proposal sent for this purpose, Ms. Lousie sent E 800 and it was possible to organize the swimming activity on a very firm footing. Money was allocated for purchase of swimwear, transport, instructor’s fees and pool hire. In order to spread the money over a period of one year, they were taken for swimming two days of the month however at the end of 2007 this activity ceased to function due to lack of funds and also due to sudden departure of a teacher who was in charge of this activity.

Her assistant has regrouped and is willing to re-start this very popular activity, an average of ten children attended this swimming class at it’s inception, these children are looking forward for the day a donor would come forward so that they could resume this very important aspect of their recreation.
