“Suwasetha” is the symbol of Sarvodaya’s philosophy of compassion, loving care and concern for the helpless child and adult. Dr. Ariyaratne – the founder of Sarvodaya refers to it as Sarvodaya’s heart.
Suwasetha began when a father walked into the office of Sarvodaya with two children – both of whom were severely malnourished.
The childcare programme that began in 1975 now comprises over 20 homes providing love and care to around 600 persons mostly destitute children, malnourished babies, teenage mothers, street children and older persons. Pre-school facilities are provided for needy children within the community and teenage mothers with training in vocational skills.
Community based rehabilitation services, day-care facilities and special education are provided for persons with disabilities.
The Suwasetha family includes Friends from all over the world who have joined with us to provide better and improved accommodation and facilities to all those under our care.”
